What Is Reiki?

Reiki is one of many tools supporting physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Reiki is composed of two Japanese words- REI and KI. REI is defined as the Higher Intelligence that guides the creation and functioning of the universe. It is a subtle wisdom that permeates everything, both animate and inanimate. On a human level, it is available to help us in times of need and to act as a source of guidance in our lives. It is also called spirit, soul, or universal God. KI is the non-physical energy that animates and flows in all living things. We receive Ki from the air we breathe, from food, water, sunshine, and from sleep. We can increase our Ki (and we Martial Artists do) by using breathing exercises and meditation. It is also called Chi, prana, bioplasma, and life force.

With this in mind, Reiki can be defined as a non-physical, healing energy made up of life force energy that is guided by the Higher Intelligence, or spiritually guided life force energy. It cannot be guided by the mind and cannot be misused, as it always creates a healing effect. It is one of the most gentle, non-intrusive forms of touch available to us.

The source of health comes from the Ki that flows through and around the individual rather than from the functional condition of the physical organs and tissues. It is Ki that animates them and therefore is responsible for creating a healthy condition. Disruption in the flow of Ki aversely affects the organs and tissues, and this disruption is the main cause of illness.

Ki does respond to thoughts and feelings, and will flow more strongly or be weakened in its action depending on the quality of ones thoughts and feelings. Negative thoughts and feelings are the main cause of restriction in the flow of Ki, especially those that are lodged in the unconscious mind. As we are not aware of their existence, we are greatly hampered in changing or eliminating them.

As Reiki is guided by the Higher Intelligence, it knows exactly where to go and how to respond to restrictions in the flow of Ki. It can work directly on the unconscious parts of the mind/body to break up and wash away these negative thoughts and feelings, allowing a normal healthy flow of Ki to resume. As this happens, the unhealthy physical organs and tissues become properly nourished with Ki and begin functioning in a balanced, healthy way- thus replacing illness with health.

There are three levels of Reiki capability, passed on through seminars given by a Certified Reiki Master Teacher. It is simple and easy to use for all ages, even young children. The hands are gently placed on the clothed body, and the energy begins to flow through the practitioner and the person receiving Reiki. As part of their training, Reiki practitioners receive a series of A tunings @ which greatly increase their sensitivities to energies, and clarify their connection with spirit. It is this connection with energy and spirit that is the essence of Reiki.
